Kristi Kongi’s personal exhibition ‘Mapping the Jungle’ will open at the Karen Huber Gallery in Mexico City. The central idea of the exhibition was born during her stay at the DEDAZO residency in early 2018. The exhibition, curated by Leslie Moody Castro visited Estonia on the invitation by Estonian Contemporary Art Development Center in 2016, presents a site-specific installation that invites the viewer to see the light and colours of the jungle through the eyes of the artist.

Maxim Mjödov, Birgit Püve and Annika Haas will take part in the 7th Photoville Festival in New York. The project by Estonian artists is titled ‘Others’ and, through three artistic perspectives, introduces three different communities living in Estonia – the mostly Russian-speaking population in Lasnamäe, the residents of Vao refugee center and the Roma – all of which are considered as ‘the others’ or not quite inherent to Estonia. The project will be presented at Photoville by Juhan Kuus Documentary Photo Centre and its curators Kristel Laur and Toomas Järvet.
Photoville festival is New York’s largest annual photo-art event, which last edition welcomed more than 92,000 visitors.

Marge Monko in Hong Kong and Krákow
Marge Monko will take part in the group exhibition ‘Crush’, opening at the Hong Kong contemporary art center Para Site in the middle of September. The exhibition deals with the darker side of love and covers topics such as getting hurt, broken hearts and giving up. The curator of the exhibition is Qu Chang, who visited Tallinn in 2015 during the Curatorial Program for Research programme. Marge Monko will show fragments of her 2006 work ‘Studies of Burgeoisie’ and her 2015 video piece ‘Dear D’. The opening of the exhibition includes a performance by Monko ‘Don’t Wind It Up, Turn It On’, presented by local actors.
In addition to Hong Kong, Marge Monko’s works can also be seen in Krákow in September. Her video work ‘Shaken Not Stirred’ (2010) is presented at the exhibition ‘ORIENT. “The New East” in Central Eastern European Art’ at the Bunkier Sztuk Gallery.

Kris Lemsalu in Bremen and Mexico City
Kris Lemsalu will participate in the international group exhibition ‘Further Thoughts on Earthy Materials’ at the Contemporary Art Museum of Bremen. The exhibition introduces contemporary artists operating in the conditions of spreading virtual reality and popularity of digital practices, who use tangible traditional materials in their work. In particular, the exposition curated by Katja Schroeder and Janneke de Vries, focuses on the use of ceramics in contemporary art and Kris Lemsalu will show her 2018 piece titled ‘Mysteriously Conceived and Deeply Felt’.
In addition to the exhibition in Bremen, Kris Lemsalu will take part in an exhibition ’10 years: 100 Sculptures’ at the Anonymous gallery in Mexico City with her work ‘Fuck Fleur’. The exhibition will open in September.

Anu Vahtra is taking part in the fall season opening show of Gallery Kendra Jayne Patrick in New York. The exhibition presents four distinctive approaches to similar and overlapping aesthetic and conceptual concerns. Departing from the arrangement of a concerto, the exhibition will feature works by Anu Vahtra, Joshua Citarella (US), Tatiana Kronberg (US), and Lap-See Lam (SE), artists whose adventurous oeuvres evoke questions about the relationship between photography and sculpture.

Merike Estna will open her solo exhibition ‘Dawn of the Swarm’ at the Bosse & Baum Gallery in London. In addition to the new series of paintings produced especially for this exhibition, Estna will also present the ceramic floor that was on show at the Baltic Triennial’s Tallinn chapter in Tallinn Art Hall and the beeswax candle sculptures first presented at her exhibition in Riga at the Kim? Contemporary Art Centre this summer. At the opening of the exhibition there will be a performative presence ‘an egg, a larva, a nymph’ (presented by Andrius Mulokas).
Estna’s solo exhibition at Bosse & Baum is accompanied by a publication ‘Dawn of the Swarm’ (designed by Ott Metusala), which includes Estna’s works from the last three years and which will be presented by publishing house Lugemik at the New York Art Book Fair in September.

Publishing house Lugemik will take part in the NY Art Book Fair for the sixth time, this time presenting three new publications:
Merike Estna’s ‘Dawn of the Swarm’ (designed by Ott Metusala), which includes works by the artist from the last three years, and is the second collaboration between Estna and Lugemik after the 2014 ‘Blue Lagoon / Pattern Book’, which is sold out by now.
Marge Monko’s ‘Women of the World’ (designed by Indrek Sirkel), based on Monko’s video piece of the same title from the solo exhibition ‘Stones Against Diamonds, Diamonds Against Stones’, which was open earlier this year.
‘The Bible Hounds Songbook’, a new book coming out in collaboration between Knock! Knock! Books, a publishing house led by Else Lagerspetz and Loore Sundja, and Lugemik, which will be presented at the fair on Saturday, September 22nd.

Eve Mutso in Oxford
Eve Mutso, a dance artist, will participate in an international group exhibition ‘Future Knowledge’ at the Modern Art Oxford. The exhibition maps the role of visual culture in acknowledging the impact of climate change. Mutso’s work ‘Loop’, created for this exhibition, is two-part, consisting of a contemporary dance performance presented by the artist on the opening night, and a coal drawing that will be produced during the performance.

Jaanus Samma in Rome and Brussels
Jaanus Samma’s solo exhibition ‘Outhouse by the Church’ will open at Nomas Foundation in Rome at the end of September. The exhibition focuses on the marginal subject of public toilets. These are places where it is possible to lose the imaginary border between public and personal. The exhibition deals with this subject on the basis of two outhouses: one of them is a nearly 100-year-old Kodavere church’s outhouse and the other one a public toilet at the Flaminio Railway Station in Rome. The curator of the exhibition is Eugenio Viola.
Since July, Jaanus Samma himself has been participating in a 6-month residency at the WIELS Center for Contemporary Art in Brussels.

Krista Mölder will open her solo exhibition ‘Inter-Space’ at the Hanaholmen Cultural Center in Espoo at the end of September. The exhibition presents works by Mölder from the last three years that have been adapted for this specific exhibition space. In addition, an artist talk with Krista Mölder will be held on October 5th as part of the programme of the cultural festival ‘Nordiska nätter’.

Estonian artists in Budapest
‘Related by Sister Languages’ is an Estonian-Hungarian contemporary art group exhibition that will open at the Ludwig Museum in Budapest. The aim of the exhibition, which involves the work of eight Estonian artists and six Hungarian artists, is to examine whether and how much the societies of the two countries have in common today, besides belonging to the same linguistic family. Curators Krisztina Szipőcs and Jan Elantkowski are trying to find an answer to this question by looking at how the artists deal with similar issues in the context of their respective homelands.
Participating Estonian artists are Dénes Farkas, Johnson & Johnson, Flo Kasearu, Marko Mäetamm, Marge Monko, Tanja Muravskaja, Kristina Norman and Kaido Ole.
